New Book on Stanley Cross
Australian cartoonist Vane Lindesay just
published another book - this time about the American-born cartoonist Stan
Cross, who gave his name to the Australian cartoonists award, 'The Stanley.'
It is published by Melbourne University Press and contains many of Australia's
favourite cartoons, including what Australians consider the best and most
famous cartoon in the world. After the cartoon first appeared in 1933 in
'Smiths Weekly,' many thousand copies were printed to grace the walls of
Australian homes.
The cartoon pictures two workmen hanging in the
air from a steel girder, one by the pants of the other, pulling them down.
The caption words, "For gorsake, stop laughing, this is serious,"
have since become a byword in Australian culture. Australians were surprised
to see the cartoon gracing the office wall of a Japanese commander in Wewak,
New Guinea, after the area was recaptured by Australian troops in 1945!
Though born in LA, in 1888, Stan Cross grew up
in Australia and was reponsible for the first Australian comic strip, 'You
and Me,' later to become 'The Potts.'
The book "Stop Laughing: This is serious"
cost 40 Australian dollars. |
