Kenyatoons and WittyWorld to hold exhibition
Nairobi, Kenya, August 22, 2002 - Kenyatoons.com in association with WittyWorld is holding an international
cartoon exhibition from 9th-28th September, 2002 at the French Cultural
Theatre in Nairobi, Kenya. The theme of the exhibition will be international
terrorism with a particular emphasis on the August 7, 1998 "Embassy
Bombings" in Kenya and Tanzania, and the September 11, 2001 attacks
on the US. The exhibition is being coordinated by Patrick Gathara,
founder of Kenyatoons.com with the assistance of WittyWorld
President Joe Szabo and Gayo, a Tanzanian cartoonist. The
deadline for submissions is August 31, 2002. Submissions from all cartoonists
are welcome and may be sent via email (at 300 dpi) to gathara@kenyatoons.com
or via post to Kenyatoons.com, P.O. Box 3613-00200, Nairobi, Kenya. Although
no prizes are being offered, all exhibitors will be acknowledged and awarded
a certificate of participation. Also, all original artwork will be returned.
Kenyan cartoonists hold workshop
Nairobi, Kenya, July 24, 2002 - Kenyan
cartoonists recently held a workshop to discuss the effect of recent amendments
to the country's laws (commonly referred to as the Media Bill), and the
courts' aggressive enforcement of libel laws on their work. Entitled "Outlawing
Opinion? The Effect of the Media Bill and Libel Laws on the Work of Kenyan
Cartoonists" the workshop was held at the Stanley hotel in Nairobi
on July 5, 2002, and was attended by over 50 participants most of whom were
either professional or aspiring cartoonists. Click here

Nairobi, Kenya, June 3, 2002 -
Kenyan cartoonists have opened a web-site at the address www.kenyatoons.com.
It includes current works of top Kenyan cartoonists Gado, Madd,
Frank Odoi, Kham, Stano, and others and it is run by
cartoonist Patrik Gathara. The site includes several categories of
cartoons and an online newsletter that is available for subscription. The
cartoons and caricatures may be purchased from the member artists. The site
gives a good overview of the current Kenyan cartooning scene. The project
has been funded by the German-based Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.
