Yokohama Convention took place in Yokohama, attracting comic book

which was staged at Pacifico Yokohama in the city's Nishi Ward.

and symposia on Manga-related topics. Aside from enjoyable topics
such as an unknown episode from the life of Osamu Tezuka,
the serious problem of "piracy" was discussed among the
attending cartoonists.
New chairman at the Saitama City Humor Center
Saitama City, Japan, July 9, 2002 - Tomoyuki Murata replaced the retiring Haruo Ishida
as chairman of the Saitama City Humor Center, the organizer of the annual
"Best Cartoons of Nippon"
exhibition in what used to be the City of Omiya. In a letter to WittyWorld,
Mr. Murata wrote: "I am convinced that cartoons and humor will be increasingly
important as devices that bring ease and comfort to people's lives when
times are hard. In continuing to realize the former chairman's wishes, I
will put my heart into helping bring about the establishment of the Humor
Center, and in supporting cartoons and humor as important aspects of culture
that can take a place of pride in the world." Two
foreign shows in Japan
Tokyo, Japan, March 20 2002 -
The 2nd FECO Japan International Cartoon Exhibition was held in Tokyo in
March 2002. The exhibition consisted of two different shows. "Eye to
Eye: Japan and Singapore" was originally held in Singapore in July
2001 and the other "Mexican Cartoon Exhibition" was held in Seoul
with the support of the Mexican Embassy in Korea in May 2001. In "Eye
to Eye" Asian, including Japanese cartoonists, competed their pokes
under the theme "How we see each other." The other show provided
a first glimpse at Mexican cartoons in Japan. The number of visitors were
below expectations, which the organizers attribute to the nation-wide recession
that the country is currently struggling with. Nevertheless, those who attended
thoroughly enjoyed the show. Next year, the exhibition will travel to the
Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Kyusyu, a southern island of Japan.
