Nonoy
is dead at 62
Manila, Philippines, October 23, 2002 -
After the recent passing of Larry Alcala, the Philippines
lost another great cartoonist this year. Severino “Nonoy”
Marcelo, one of the country’s foremost cartoonists,
died October 22 of complications from diabetes. He was 62. His comic
strips made Filipinos laugh back when the Martial Law cast a long
shadow on the land till its death. Marcelo, whose strips have been
carried by various publications, made people forget their problems
and focus on the bigger social questions using wit and humor (Chong
Ardivilla's obituary).
A Filipino legend is gone
Bacolod City, Philippines, July 7, 2002 - Larry Alcala, who entertained three generations of Filipinos,
died of a heart attack at his home at the Villa Valderama Subdivision on
June 24, 2002. He was 75. Alcala created over 500 characters, 20 comic strips,
six movies, and about 15,000 published pages in more than a half century
of cartooning. Through the characters of Mang Ambo, Kalabog en Bosyo, Asyong
Aksaya, Siopawman and many others, he entertained and provided social commentary
at the same time. His most popular regular feature was "Slice of Life,"
where he challenged readers to spot a caricature of himself within the cartoon
that depicted situations in the lives of typical Filipino families. He regularly
contributed to the Philippine Star and the Sunday Times Magazine
until his death. Alcala received numerous awards and citations for his work.
Among the most recent were the Araw ng Maynila Award in 1994, Pamana Award
for Cartooning in 1991, Catholic Press Award for Best in Humor in 1998,
the MOPC-SPIC Excellence in Cartooning, and the UP Alumni Association Professional
Award in Fine Arts. He served as chair of the Visual Arts Department of
the UP College of Fine Arts until he retired in the mid-1990s. Alcala's
remains were laid to rest at the Loyola Memorial Park in Parañaque
City.
