A new comics library in Brazil
Sao Paulo, Brazil, December 14, 2002 - Last
month the Gibiteca SESI officially opened its doors to the public.
The new comics library located in the Cultural Center FIESP on Avenida
Paulista, Sao Paulo's main thoroughfare, was funded by FIESP, the
social and cultural arm of the powerful Federation of Industries
of the State of Sao Paulo. At the opening visitors were greeted
by giant reproductions of such superheroes as Superman, Spider-Man
or Wolverine. The library projects to have about 15,000 publications
by their first anniversary, thus making Gibiteca SESI into one of
the largest comics libraries in South America. (more).
Colin
honored posthumously in Porto Alegre
Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, December 1, 2002
- The 10th International Salon of Press Drawings announced its winners
at Cultural Center Usina do Gasometro, in Porto Alegre. They are:
Gilmar Fraga (Brazil; caricature), Alexandre Coelho
(Brazil; Illustration), Ed Rodrigues (Brazil, Comics),
Tomas Zaual (Cuba, Cartoon), and Rafael
Sica (Brazil, Political Cartoon). Each winner won R$2.000
(two thousand reais) . The jury decided to give out honour mentions
to the following cartoonists: Fermin del Portillo
(Uruguay), Luis Gustavo Guimarães (Brazil),
Dante Ginevra (Argentina), Luciano Kayser
(Brazil) and Crist (Argentina). The event is promoted
by Porto Alegre City Hall and GRAFAR, an association of local graphic
artists. The 2002 honored artist was Flavio Colin.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1930, Colin was one of the top Brazilian
illustrators. The creator of many importants comics (see sample
top right), Colin passed away earlier this year before having been
honored..
Brazilian humor weekly showcased
at festival
Piracicaba, Brazil, October 9, 2002 - The
new and the old generation of the best Brazilian cartoonists joined
with an excellent team of journalists and columnists in a unique
publication. The weekly O Pasquim 21, printed in a standard
format (12 x 22 inches) and in color, was created by well-known
cartoonist Ziraldo and his brother Zelio
Alves Pinto, who is also a cartoonist. Published in Rio
de Janeiro since last February and distribuited throughout Brazil,
O Pasquim21 was honored by the Piracicaba Humor Exhibition
this year. A full room with reproductions of all covers and principal
pages along with giants banners was dedicated to the humor weekly.
The event was organized by Paulo Caruso, a staff
cartoonist who also had his originals exhibited there.

Lan is honored in Piracicaba
Piracicaba,
Brazil, October 6, 2002 - Famed Brazilian
caricaturist Lan, 77, was honored with a special
exhibition at Engenho Central, during the 29th International Humor
Exhibition of Piracicaba. Lan (Lanfranco Aldo Ricardo Vaselli
Cortelini Rossi Rossini) was born in Monte Varchi, Italy.
After living in Uruguay and Argentina, he moved to Rio de Janeiro
in 1952, where he worked for the newspapers such Ultima Hora,
Jornal do Brasil and O Globo. Lan became famous by
his special attention to drawing Brazilian girls or "mulatas"
(see WittyWorld Bulletin 3/1996) and the schools of samba
("escolas de samba"). His admirable talent came through
forcefully in his original caricatures at this show featuring famous
personages as in his drawings of beautiful beaches, canaries, and
the people from Rio de Janeiro (the "cariocas").
Orlandeli launches Grump Magazine
São Jose do Rio Preto, Brazil, August 30, 2002 - Launched by Editora Escala (Graphic Talents series), GRUMP
Magazine is a new work from brazilian cartoonist Orlandeli. Grump
is the name of a boy, the principal person of this magazine, who lives through
funny situations with his dog Vândalo. Orlandeli is from a new generation
of brazilian cartoonists whose work is a delightful reminder of the masteri
of the great Henfil. Orlandeli lives in São Jose do Rio Preto,
north of São Paulo State. The comic strip "Grump & Vândalo"
has been running in many Brazilian newspapers, distributed by Agência
Estado, for many years. This edition also includes a making of Grump,
showing how this comic magazine was produced. The presentation is made by
Cosquinha the clown, another charecter created by the cartoonist.
FIHQ
announces the 2002 winners
Pernambuco, Brazil, August 29, 2002 - The Fourth Festival Internacional de Humor e Quadrinhos de Pernambuco
(FIHQ-PE), sponsored by the Cultural Department of the Government of the
State of Pernambuco, along with ACAPE (Pernambuco's Cartoonists Association)
announced the winners of the 2002 event. All are from Brazil. They are:
Francisco Costa (caricature); Dalcio Machado (editorial cartoon);
Sandro Perli (cartoon) and Max Maciel (comics). Honorable
mentions went to Junior Lopes (caricature); Jose Costa
(editorial cartoon); Rodrigo Rosa (cartoon) and Cristiano
Mascaro (comics). The Malakoff Cultural Observatory gave home to the

Bahia International Humor Contest results
Bahia, Brazil, August 23, 2002 -
The Bahia International Humour Contest announced that this year's winner
of the grand prize (r$ 5.000,00) is Marlon Tenório of Brazil.
The jury, Antônio Cedraz (Magazine Turma do Xaxado), Cau
Gomez (A Tarde newspaper), Edgard Filho (Museu de Arte Moderna
da Bahia MAM ), Fred Ozanan (Correio da Paraiba newspaper) and John
Lent (International Journal of Comic Art and WittyWorld) offered Special
Mentions to Dachuan Xia (China), Marcio Leite (Brasil), and
Héctor Salas (Brasil). The theme of the competition was Light
and Diet Culture.
First Brazilian to win in Knokke-Heist
Knokke-Heist, Belgium, February 17, 2002 - The jury of one of Europe's older and better known cartoon competitions,
the Knokke-Heist International Cartoon Festival, has awarded the first prize
"The Golden Hat" to Brazilian cartoonist Biratan Porto.
The proclamation will be in Saturday, June 8, 2002. This is the first time
that a Brazilian artist won a first prize in Knokke-Heist. Ubiratan Nazareno
Borges Porto (Biratan) was born in Belém do Pará in 1950.
He developed his cartoon based on the theme "cloning."
