CROATIA
Satirical newsweekly in trouble with a repressive law (1996)
The Croatian parliament passed legislation March 29, 1996, making it criminal
to criticize or write/publish a satirical commentary on the president, the
prime minister, the speaker of the parliament, or the chief magistrates
of the supreme and constitutional courts.
On June 4th, the satirical weekly Feral Tribune, its editor-in-chief,
and a journalist were brought to trial for defaming President Franjo Tudjman.
The basis of the lawsuit is an April 29 article that appeared together with
a cartoon criticizing the president's proposal to rebury the remains of
World War II Fasists alongside their victims.

The cartoon that accompanied the Feral Tribune article.
For credit, the French-sounding Honore was printed under the picture.
As of late 1996, there were no charges filed against the cartoonist. |
