Zhang, Yaoning

Zhang, Yaoning was born in Beijing in 1951,. A graduate of Fine Arts of Beijing College of Education, Zhang has been member of Chinese Artist Association (CAA), Cartoon Art Commission of CAA; Secretary General of China Journalistic Cartoon Society; and Senior Editor & Manager of the Art Department of China Daily, the only English language newspaper in China, since 1980. Specialized in editorial cartoons, his drawings have been selected for every major exhibition held in China from 1988 to date. His work has been published in China and abroad in many journals and newspapers, including the People's Daily, Guangming Daily, Japan Times, Hong Kong Ming Bao, and The World Press. Cartoon collections having published his work include "China Cartoon Collection," "The Finest International Political Cartoons in Our Time," "Best Cartoon Selection in China 2000," and the "China Daily News Cartoons Collection." Zhang's best known cartoon features are Focus and Plane, Cartoon Manner (comic strips), Mr. Q in the Stock Market, and Ladies and Gentlemen: Don't Be Shy. His cartoons won the National News Cartoon Award in 1987 and 1991, the China Journalist Prize in 1993, the Beijing News Awards in 2001, and his research paper "On News Cartoons" was rewarded for China News Prize in 1997. Internationally, Zhang's cartoons were exhibited in Brazil, Turkey, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan and he solely represented the CAA at the International Cartoon Research Conference in Turkey in 1997, where he presented his paper titled "Cartoons in China."
