Godfrey (Gado) Mwampembwa

Gado, born Godfrey Mwampembwa is originally from Tanzania. He was only 15 when he started doing cartoons and soon was freelancing for such newspapers and magazines as the Daily News, Business Times, and The Express in Dar es Salaam. After completing high school, he served a year in the military before taking courses in architecture. Since 1992 he has been working with the Daily Nation, the largest newspaper in East and Central Africa based in Nairobi, Kenya. Although he has no formal art education, Gado's talent and interest took him to many different artistic fields. He has done illustrations, book covers, posters, as well as various other types of commercial art, for clients in Tanzania, Kenya, Italy, and the United Nations. In his spare time he paints in oil and water color. He has done one comic book, "Abunuasi," and contributed cartoons to a Dutch book on North and South relations. Gado's cartoons have been exhibited in Tanzania, Kenya, the Netherlands, and Finland.
