Joe Békési

Békési "Joe" József is a Budapest based caricaturist who, with his innovative work, earned international fame. He was born in 1946. Finished his art studies in 1964 as a sculptor. He has worked as an architect, restaurator, sculptor, and in the in the film industry as a decorator and advertising manager. At the end of the 1980s he had his own copy shop and joined the underground sumisdat movement. It was there where he began drawing political cartoons. Later he became a staff member of Hungary's once famous, but now defunct, satirical weekly Ludas Matyi. Joe has drawn caricatures and portraits in various countries including Austria, England, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Japan. He is now the president of the Hungarian Cartoonist Association and is working as a freelance cartoonist/caricaturist. Joe Békési joined WittyWorld in 1994.
