Tayfun Akgul, Ph.D.

Tayfun Akgul, Ph.D. is an academician (Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering) and a professional cartoonist - regularly published in the Science and Technology section of the prestigious daily newspaper Cumhuriyet in Turkey. He has a cartoon corner called `Et Cetera` in the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine. An active member of the Cartoonists' Association of Turkey since 1986, his drawings appeared in three Turkish math books: "Matematik ve Oyun" (Mathematics and Game), "Matematik ve Doga," (Mathematics and Nature), "Matematik ve Sonsuz," (Mathematics and Infinity) as well as in Bilim ve Ütopya, Cumhuriyet Bilim ve Teknik, Karikatur, EMO, and Karikaturk and in the American "IEEE The Institute," Journal of Irreproducible Results, Pittnews, and In Pittsburgh. He also published his work on various online sites.

In the framework of the June 2000 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (Istanbul, Turkey), Akgul organized a competition and exhibition titled "Humor in Science, Mathematics, Communications and Information Technology" with special emphasis on "Humor in Signal Processing." The contest drew submissions by 238 cartoonists from 44 countries. Afterward, with the cooperation of the Cartoon and Humor Museum of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Akgul coordinated the production and distribution of a CD-book with 180 cartoons.

While at Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA, he organized three humor-related events with the title "International Fool-Proof Research Symposium" on April 1st of the years 1998, 1999, and 2000.
